Agnes Scott College will
begin offering a new major and minor in business management in Fall 2014.
Business continues to be
one of the most popular majors in the U.S. and the new major and minor were
created in response to student demand for expanded courses in business.
recently partnered with the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Scheller College
of Business to
provide a pathway for Agnes Scott students to enroll in Georgia Tech’s Master
of Business Administration (MBA) program. The two institutions also partnered
in 2010 to create the Bridge to Business program, an intensive three-week
summer program which introduces Agnes Scott students to key business concepts
and serves as an introduction to an MBA.
“Agnes Scott students have shown
tremendous interest in management and accounting courses and in co-curricular business
programming,” said Tom Will, director of the Bridge to Business program and the
MBA Linkage program and associate professor of management at Agnes Scott. “The
new business management major enables the college to meet the needs of women
who want to couple a thorough grounding in business education with the breadth
and rigor of Agnes Scott’s core liberal arts curriculum.”
“Supporting the success of our students is vital,” said Carolyn
J. Stefanco, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. “Not
only is a business degree attractive to many potential employers, it also
contributes to the college’s mission to prepare women for global leadership.”
At Fortune 500 companies, women hold just 4.4 percent of CEO
positions, 14.3 percent of executive officer positions, and 16.6 percent of
Board of Director seats.
In keeping with Agnes Scott’s focus on the liberal arts, the
college’s business major will be rooted in the study of how individuals and
societies behave, and will enable students to contribute effectively to a
variety of organizations, including non-profit, government, and entrepreneurial
ventures, as well as traditional corporations, Stefanco said.
