DECATUR — Agnes Scott College has received a $2-million grant from The Goizueta Foundation for two new programs, the Goizueta Global Leadership Project and the Goizueta STEM Success Initiative.
“This extraordinary gift from The Goizueta Foundation supports two of Agnes Scott’s highest strategic priorities, promoting leadership in a global society and encouraging more women to pursue math and science careers,” said Agnes Scott President Elizabeth Kiss, “We are so excited about the innovative teaching and learning this gift will catalyze. It will help Agnes Scott become a college of choice for young women who aspire to confront the world’s biggest challenges or who want to help diversify scientific opportunity and leadership in our country and around the world.”
The Goizueta Global Leadership Project will support Agnes Scott’s new strategic plan, helping the college launch an innovative campus-wide curriculum focused on global learning and leadership development. Funding from The Goizueta Foundation will enable students to understand major global challenges like clean water, human trafficking, and climate change and develop the leadership skills they need to tackle them. The Goizueta Global Leadership Project includes support for interdisciplinary, global issues courses, leadership labs, and an annual Global Leadership Summit.
The Goizueta STEM Success Initiative will bolster Agnes Scott’s efforts to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Goizueta funds will be used to strengthen the college’s Resource Center for Math and Science, recruit additional peer tutors and create a new career seminar that connects Agnes Scott students with successful women working in STEM-related professions.
“Agnes Scott can play a major role in developing young women to become the next generation of leaders and hold STEM-related careers,” said Olga Goizueta Rawls, Chair and CEO of The Goizueta Foundation and daughter of Roberto C. Goizueta. “My father was a scientist himself and global learning and leadership were priorities for him, so we are proud to honor his legacy and Agnes Scott with this funding.”
The grant is the latest of several significant gifts to Agnes Scott. With this gift, the college has now raised more than $80 million toward its $100 million goal for its Greatness Before Us campaign, which entered its public phase in fall 2012 and will conclude in December 2016.
