Decatur, GA, March 21, 2019—Agnes Scott College was recognized in the 2018 U.S. News and World Report rankings for being the most innovative school in the nation among liberal arts colleges. In the fall of 2019, Agnes Scott will welcome graduate students pursuing a Master of Arts in Social Innovation. 1608069_jh_046_laquita_blockson-1.jpg

The new graduate program will be led by its founding faculty director, Dr. Laquita Blockson. Bringing over 20 years of experience in social entrepreneurship and university teaching to Agnes Scott, Blockson holds bachelor's and master’s degrees in business administration from Florida A&M University and a Ph.D. in management from the University of Pittsburgh. Her academic expertise includes not-for-profit entrepreneurship, gender and entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurial ethics. Recently, Blockson served as a Research Fellow with Rutgers Business School’s Center for Urban Entrepreneurship and Economic Development. She has also shared her expertise abroad as a visiting professor in China at Shenzhen University and in New Zealand at the University of Otago.

Influenced by Agnes Scott’s commitment to thinking deeply, living honorably and engaging intellectual and social challenges, the Master of Arts in Social Innovation program immerses students in the principles of social entrepreneurship. Blending interdisciplinary knowledge to address social problems and the business skills needed to drive change, students take coursework in funding and investing in social ventures, project management, social policy, leadership ethics, non-profit management and philanthropy, and community economic development, among others. “The program is ideal for anyone who seeks to address wicked social problems,” notes Kelly H. Ball, assistant dean for graduate and extended programs at Agnes Scott, “and anyone who seeks to create sustainable social change and financial value through cross-sector approaches.”

Agnes Scott’s social innovation graduate program is one of three new graduate programs launching in fall 2019. Graduate students can also pursue a graduate certificate in data visualization or a Master of Science or graduate certificate in applied technology beginning in fall 2019. Currently, Agnes Scott offers a Master of Arts and graduate certificate in writing and digital communication and a graduate certificate in evaluation and assessment methods.
