Community Service
Connecting with the Community
SUMMIT's community engagement is one of the many ways Agnes Scott College achieves its mission of educating students to “think deeply, live honorably, and engage the intellectual and social challenges of their times.” By participating in community engagement activities and events, students will:
- Build knowledge and awareness of a variety of social issues within local and global contexts
- Understand the underlying and contributing factors that impact social issues and various ways of addressing both the causes and effects of these issues
- Determine a personal ethical framework through which they see, interact with, and serve the world around them
- Recognize how their multiple identities impact their service to others and the perception of that service
- Build skills related to leadership and global citizenship by engaging in service and service-learning opportunities aimed at alleviating social problems and their short and long term effects
- Develop an attitude of meaningful life-long service in students’ local communities, state, nation, and world
Impact Your Community
Successful community engagement starts with service and leadership. By addressing societal needs alongside impacted communities, students participating in service programs have the opportunity to showcase their leadership qualities in Decatur and beyond. While at Agnes Scott, it is easy to find opportunities to volunteer - students just have to check out the Scotties Serve website!
Signature Programs
Splash into Service - Each year as part of Week of Welcome, the Center for Leadership and Service plans Splash into Service to give first-year students a taste of service at Agnes. This event brings together students, faculty, and staff to work together on several projects. Beginning the day with a shared meal, then departing to service sites, participants engage with the wider Metro Atlanta community and learn how they can make a difference.
Rise Against Hunger Meal Packaging Event - Hosted by the Center for Leadership and Service, the event brings students together to put meal packages together for Rise Against Hunger, an organization that partners with other organizations to distribute food in developing countries.
Other Volunteer Opportunities - Volunteer! Decatur, Hands-on Atlanta, Volunteer Match
Civic Engagement
A large part of civic engagement is exercising your right to vote. Agnes Scott College and the Gué Pardue Hudson Center for Leadership and Service is excited to partner with TurboVote, a resource from Democracy Works. By using this website, students can register to vote, receive an absentee ballot, and get text or email reminders about upcoming elections.
